I should mention that I have been in this business pretty much all my life and most times that these calls ever happen, it is mostly only competitors posing as customers to find out what we charge for a ceramic coating cost and nothing more. Pathetic isn’t it? Customers most times are oblivious as to how price structuring even applies to how much a ceramic coating costs on a new car or used car.
No two cars that we have ever serviced have ever cost the same to apply a ceramic coating for paint protection. We have had car paint protection costs from as little as 750 dollars to as high as 5500 dollars. Yes, that is crazy, but the question you need to ask is, did the paint protection really cost that much and secondly, is car paint protection even worth that much money to begin with?
Well, the truth of the matter is, no, the paint protection was not worth 5500 dollars, no more than it was more than 2200 dollars on the BMW pictured over to the right here, or even less than 2000 dollars. Most customers do not understand that paint protection or applying a ceramic coating to a car is the least of your issues when it comes to car paint protection.
Applying the actual ceramic coating is rather simple if you do it right. Do it wrong and you may run into issues, but having said this, it is relatively easy to apply and can be done within two to three hours. Yes, that is correct, you read that right, Two to three hours.
Paint Factors That Can Influence The Cost Of A Ceramic Coating
Most people, if they wanted to do it themselves, would be able to if they took a chance on learning how to do it. The only real issue is, that you can not apply a ceramic coating on top of car paint without any preparation to the paint what so ever. Car paint must be free of most defects and 100% clean of any contaminants on its surfaces.
Some Questions You Need To Ask Are:
- Is The Paint Clean?
- Is It Free Of Contaminants?
- Is It Free Of Any Etching Marks?
- Is The Car Paint Faded?
- Is The Car Paint Peeling?
- Is The Car Paint Free From Scratches And Swirl Marks?
- If It Is Clean And Just Has Scratches And Swirl Marks
- Is There Enough Paint Thickness For Paint Correction To Restore The Paint Before Applying A Ceramic Coating?
There are many different circumstances when it comes to applying a ceramic coating on any car. Pictured to the left here is a Lexus. As you can see, the condition of the paint is not to its best and applying a ceramic coating is out of the question until this paint is restored or at least the majority of all swirls and scratches are permanently removed. This customer wanted a cheap as possible ceramic coating, but this could not be done as he wished because, quite simply, the end result would not have been worth the investment.
Part of that result is a dissatisfied customer who now has to pay the bill for what was quoted, all because the customer wanted a cheap ceramic coating. So what is better? I prefer to lose the customers than charge for a ceramic coating that is not up to standard.
The Lexus here, as you can see, required paint correction before any app, liucation of ceramic coating, so asking about the ceramic coating cost here, is everything to do with the paint correction cost. This entire vehicle cost 2200 dollars. Basically, paint correction had to be carried out before any ceramic coating, but applying the coating on its own with no prep into this paint job is out of the question.
Damaged Car Paint Must Be Restored Before Any Ceramic Coating Treatment.
Paint correction is a definite requirement before any paint protection application. Any paint protection cost on its own should never really exceed 2200 dollars on its own. When I say…” on its own ” … without any other paint correction charges or pre-application work that is required to be carried out.
At the end of the day, what a paint protection expert wishes to charge is entirely up to the applicator. If they want to 600 dollars, they can charge 600, if they want to charge 5000 dollars, they can charge 5K. Having said that though, if you pay 5K for paint protection, I have to say you will been ripped off excessively.
No paint protection in my opinion is worth more than 2200 dollars, and I say 2200 because the vehicle size varies. I have charged from as little as 950 to 1800 for Silverado-size vehicles, and that customer thought that was expensive.
I should have sent that customer to one of those shiny workshops with chequered floors, nice mirrors everywhere and classy lounges. I have restored enough cars for customers who paid through the nose for a ceramic coating in a fancy paint protection centre somewhere in Sydney. It is not the first and will not be the last.
All too many customers fall for this image of gliiter n glitz in paint protection services. You pay for a service to be carried out on your car, not for the privilege of sitting on a cushy lounge while being charged 5 thousand dollars for paint protection with no real pre paint preparation requirements. Here at Dr Buff, we have never had any ceramic coating cost exceed 4500 dollars and that involved some SERIOUS Paint correction restoration before applying any ceramic coating properties.
Is A Ceramic Coating Treatment For A Car Woth $5000 Dollars?
The BMW pictured here belongs to a customer who resides in Auburn, NSW. He called concerned that although his car had very little damage, he was concerned that he was being charged in excess of $5000 dollars for a paint protection package for his car. I asked this customer if he was happy with the condition of the paint or if it needed any paint correction, and he responded that the paint protection service was only quoting for the coating application and had no paint correction charge associated with it. If this was the case, you have to ask yourself, how much would it cost if it needed paint correction?
Ok, common sense needs to apply here, but most customers do not understand anything about the cost of ceramic coatings on cars, how long they take and exactly what it is that ceramic coatings do for your paintwork. Put simply, paint protection without any pre-treatment takes no longer than three hours to apply by hand, is quicker by machine and is not 100% bulletproof either.
Although it does protect your paint for up to five years, you have to ask, is something that is applied within three hours, and is not bulletproof really worth investing 5000 dollars? Of course not. If you are being charged in excess of more than 1800 – 2000 dollars for paint protection with no correction work, and that is for a large SUV or work hack, our best advice is to walk off and look around.
Here at Dr Buff, we completed this vehicle with stage 1 paint correction and a ceramic coating applied afterwards, and these were the results above. All this was done for a total cost of $2200 dollars including stage 1 paint correction. Far fetch from $5000 dollars alone for a paint protection package. So, before you call asking for a price on a ceramic coating package, ask yourself a few questions about your car paint first, because if you are not satisfied with the paint condition, you will need to add this to the cost but to answer the question simply, anything with no paint correction involved should balance between $1100 to $2K Maximum. Anything above this and I would highly recommend you keep looking for a better deal
